Operations Manager

Job Summary:

Oversee and ensure compliance with established procedures related to food safety, quality, and customer specifications during the manufacturing process, while focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs), metrics, and analytics to drive continuous improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Team Management : Manage work schedules and assess work performance of direct reports. Provide both positive and constructive feedback to ensure understanding of expectations.

  • Leadership : Offer leadership, direction, and guidance to direct reports and department employees.

  • Quality Assurance : Verify that departmental workflows and procedures support the consistent production of quality products in an efficient and effective manner.

  • Supervisory Duties : Conduct supervisory responsibilities in line with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including training, planning, assigning work, assessing performance, and disciplining employees when necessary.

  • Operational Knowledge : Maintain a working knowledge of all procedures, processes, SAP, paperwork, and equipment within the plant.

  • Safety Management : Provide a safe working environment by enforcing all safety policies and procedures.

  • Work Environment : Promote a positive work environment and raise employee morale.

  • Problem-Solving : Identify and analyze problems, explore alternative solutions, and implement recommendations for resolution.

  • Relationship Building : Foster cooperative working relationships with direct reports, peers, and management.

  • Process Improvement : Evaluate, develop, implement, and maintain process improvements for operations.

  • Project Management : Develop project plans, coordinate projects, and communicate changes and progress.

  • Special Projects : Be available for special projects that contribute to departmental and overall business success.

  • Compliance : Participate in mock recall exercises and verify traceability records for completeness and accuracy.

  • Talent Development : Develop in-house talent for succession planning.

  • Financial Understanding : Interpret financial data, understand overheads, and analyze how yields, throughputs, and labor affect budgets.

  • Task Delegation : Delegate tasks to subordinates and follow up to ensure completion.

  • Cost Savings : Initiate cost-saving measures through process improvements, machine upgrades, and vendor changes.

  • Holistic Business View : Make decisions based on the company's best interests.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration : Participate in cross-functional management teams.

  • Acting Director : Temporarily assume the duties of the Director of Operations as needed.

  • KPI and Metrics Management : Develop, monitor, and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure alignment with company goals. Use metrics to track performance and identify areas for improvement.

  • Analytics : Utilize data analytics to drive decision-making processes, optimize operations, and enhance overall efficiency. Regularly review and report on performance metrics to senior management.

Essential Education and Experience:

  • Experience : Food manufacturing experience is highly preferred. Candidates must be dependable, detail-oriented, able to follow directions, work under minimal supervision, and record data accurately. Willingness to work weekends and overtime is required.

  • Education : Bachelor’s degree in food science or a related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:

  • Read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.

  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, and the public.

Math Ability:

  • Calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.

  • Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Solve practical problems and deal with variables where limited standardization exists.

  • Interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet software.

  • Familiarity with data analytics tools and software is a plus.

Physical Demands:

  • Lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Stand for extended periods.

  • Frequently stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.

  • Occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Ensure production employees are trained and capable of performing their jobs.

  • Enforce company policies.

  • Demonstrate decision-making abilities and address non-conforming areas regarding quality.

  • Mentor and train personnel for adequate succession planning.

  • Lead the team with positive and constructive reinforcement.

  • Assist in the maintenance and calibration of process equipment when necessary.

  • Identify and resolve problems promptly, gather and analyze information, and develop alternative solutions.

  • Monitor and report on KPIs and metrics to drive continuous improvement.

  • Use analytics to support the success of company goals and objectives.

Work Environment:

  • Operate in a manufacturing environment and occasionally in an office setting.

  • Extended periods of standing while walking the production floor and occasional periods of sitting using a computer or other devices.
